The Salvation Army Delivers Goodness on National Donut Day
Social Services Organization Hands Out Smiles by the Dozen on National Donut Day
Anchorage, AK (June 5, 2020) – Held annually on the first Friday in June, National Donut Day is a sweet time to celebrate America’s heroes. On June 5, The Salvation Army will thank the men and women on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic by delivering donuts and hope.
This tradition dates back to World War I, when nearly 250 Salvation Army volunteers traveled overseas to provide emotional and spiritual support, fried confectionary, clothes and supplies to troops. For more than a century, the organization has continued to provide snacks, hydration, and comfort to the first responders and front-line workers.
"The Salvation Army has been a beacon of hope for Alaskans since 1898 when we entered the state to provide assistance to those struggling along the Klondike," said Major John Brackenbury, The Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Commander. "Donut Day celebrates the lassies who delivered donuts to our soldiers on the front lines in World War I, and this Donut Day, we celebrate our men and women who have been on the front lines against COVID-19."
The Salvation Army canteen will be distributing donuts to our Hometown Heroes in Anchorage at the following locations:
- Anchorage Police Department parking lot from 6:45 - 7:30 AM
- Anchorage Fire Station 1 from 8:45 AM - 9:30 AM
- Alaska Native Medical Center Campus main entry from 2:30 - 3:30 PM
A team will also be deployed to share some of the tasty treats at the 12 fire stations throughout Anchorage.
Since the beginning of the coronavirus outbreak, The Salvation Army has responded with personal protective gear (PPE) donations, childcare, meals, hydration, and cot delivery to front-line workers across the country.
The Salvation Army has also adapted its own services to meet the growing needs of America’s most vulnerable with drive-thru food pantries, increased capacity at emergency shelters, remote emotional and spiritual care through live stream services, care hotlines, and more.
