Anchorage volunteers and community members help collect toys for Christmas Day

Anchorage, AK – Walmart and The Salvation Army are joining forces to provide toys to local children in need during the holidays with a toy drive event at Walmart stores in Anchorage, Eagle River, Wasilla and Fairbanks on Saturday, Nov. 9 from 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.

The Dimond Walmart store is one of many stores nationwide taking place in similar toy drives. On November 9, shoppers will receive a list of suggested toy items. To participate, simply stop by and drop off new toys to The Salvation Army at the front of each Walmart store.

“Thousands of Anchorage children and families seek Christmas assistance every year,” said Captain Peter Pemberton from The Salvation Army. “last year, the public’s generosity helped The Salvation Army provide over 22,000 Alaskan children with Christmas toys they would not receive otherwise.”

“We believe that no child should have to go empty-handed, especially during the Holidays. Walmart is teaming up with the Salvation Army once again to make sure Alaskan children have a toy to unwrap and get to truly experience the season of giving," said Brad Spitz, Walmart Market Manager on Alaska.

Local families, like the Porterfield family in Anchorage, rely on The Salvation Army’s help to give their children the gift of Christmas every year.

For those unable to participate in-store on November 9, The Salvation Army has provided a searchable online registry comprising all the items needed; each item requires just one click to purchase: https://bit.ly/2NMT6Nl

Walmart and The Salvation Army have collaborated for more than 30 years to meet local community needs. Supporters like Walmart help The Salvation Army serve more than 23 million Americans each year through a range of social services, which help families overcome poverty.

All toys given to The Salvation Army at this Saturday’s holiday toy drive event will remain in the local communities they were donated in and will help The Salvation Army provide Christmas assistance to children and families in the most need this holiday season.
