FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: December 9, 2018

Wasilla, AK – The Salvation Army Mat-Su Valley Corps received a special gift of a 1978 South African gold Krugerrand from an anonymous donor on Friday, December 7, 2018, at the Three Bears Alaska red kettle location in Wasilla, AK. The Krugerrand was found during collections at the end of the day wrapped in a small note in memory of a loved one.

Janet Kincaid, The Salvation Army Mat-Su Corps Advisory Board Chair, was the person to find the coin. “Mat-su Salvation Army is ecstatic to be the recipient of this wonderful donation,” said Kincaid.

The gift of the Krugerrand has a history with The Salvation Army red kettles in the US. Annually, kettles in various states receive the anonymous gift often randomly, but Alaska has never been a recipient until now. As of today, the one ounce gold Krugerrand is estimated at a value of about $1,251.

“The Krugerrand is a great boost to our kettle campaign,” stated Major John Brackenbury, The Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Commander. “Despite this one donation, we are still in need of the public’s support for our ongoing services in light of the recent earthquake.”

For those that don’t happen to have a Krugerrand on hand, but are still looking to donate, visit alaska.salvationarmy.org to make an online donation to support The Salvation Army programs and services in Alaska. In addition, The Salvation Army is still in high need of bell ringing volunteers in the Anchorage and surrounding areas.
