Food Drive in Anchorage

In May, The Salvation Army held a large drive-thru food distribution event for those in need at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Maplewood Avenue in Anchorage. Volunteers and staff donning face masks and gloves provided hundreds of food bags and grocery gift cards to individuals and families. Our sincere thanks to our partners who supported the event:  Latter Day Saints Charities; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Maplewood Avenue); Anchorage School District; and, the Alaska Air National Guard.

It was a wonderful experience to work with other community members in preparing food for distribution,” said volunteer Eddie Hakala, who helped pack the food bags for the event along with his family. “After being isolated for several weeks from gatherings of any kind, our family especially enjoyed the love and fellowship of others as we worked together. This experience left a lasting impression on our children and we all left with our hearts warmed and our spirits filled with gratitude.”

“Right now, thousands of Alaskans are struggling with making a choice between paying their bills or buying groceries while being out of work due to the pandemic,” said Major John Brackenbury, The Salvation Army Divisional Commander. “The Salvation Army is thankful we are able to help lift the burden of food insecurity for many Alaskans with the help of community partners like Latter-day Saints Charities.”

Although this event was just one day, Salvation Army Corps throughout Alaska have been providing monthly food boxes, daily meals and assisting with a variety of other needs. While employment, food security and shelter continue to be an issue for Alaskans, The Salvation Army will continue Doing the Most Good.
