The Salvation Army Alaska Division Celebrates National Salvation Army Week
National Salvation Army Week has been celebrated throughout the U.S. since commissioned by Pres. Eisenhower in 1954.
Anchorage —This week, May 13-19, 2019, marks the 65th National Salvation Army Week celebrated throughout the United States. First commissioned by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954, because, “Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of human brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern. In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans. Giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of us all.”
Thankful for the 120 years The Salvation Army Alaska Division has been able to serve Alaskans, National Salvation Army Week is a moment to reflect on the good work The Salvation Army, staff and volunteers does to transform lives for the better. The week celebrates the life changing work of The Salvation Army in Alaska through programs providing rehabilitation, cognitive reparation, spiritual assistance, food, shelter and more. The Salvation Army’s mission is to meet human needs in His name without discrimination.
In celebration of the week, Salvation Army Thrift Stores in Anchorage and Wasilla will hold store-wide sales. The Salvation Army Family Thrift Store on Dimond Blvd. in Anchorage will be open to the public for a sneak peek at the newly renovated store with some great sales on Saturday and Sunday, May 18-19, from 11 AM to 5 PM.
On Saturday, May 18, from 11:30AM – 1:30PM, Anchorage will be treated to a spectacular fundraising art auction event at the Egan Center. The 12th Annual Salvation Army Transformed Treasures art auction and luncheon will feature work from some of Alaska’s most prominent artists who donated their time and talent to produce art from items found at The Salvation Army’s Family Stores. The event raises awareness and funds for the many service programs of The Salvation Army such as The McKinnell House Family Shelter, which houses homeless families. The Clitheroe Center, which provides substance abuse rehabilitation for those struggling with addiction. Family Service, which provides food boxes for the hungry. Serendipity Adult Day Center, which provides adults with special needs a life of hope and success and the Older Alaskan’s Program, which provides some of Anchorage’s most vulnerable adults with daily meal delivery.
