THE SALVATION ARMY PROVIDES LARGE-SCALE FOOD BAG DISTRIBUTION TO NEEDY ANCHORAGE FAMILIES
Thanks to a partnership with Latter-day Saints Charities
Anchorage, AK – In partnership with Latter-day Saints Charities, The Salvation Army will be distributing 500 food bags to families in need in the Anchorage area this Friday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Midtown. Food will be packed on Wednesday, May 13, 2020, by Salvation Army volunteers and distributed in a drive-through fashion to families who have been identified as in the most need by two local nonprofits.
The partnership with Latter-day Saints Charities, in response to COVID-19, has provided The Salvation Army with funding to provide food, personal protective equipment, and hygiene items in Salvation Army locations throughout the Western United States.
“We’re deeply concerned about those we consider to be our brothers and sisters who are suffering because of COVID-19,” said Bishop Gérald Caussé, presiding bishop of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “We want to help and know we can rely on these trusted partners, who are already doing so much good, to reach those who are in greatest need.”
The Salvation Army has been working to meet food, shelter, emotional and spiritual needs of those who are coping with circumstances brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. As of May 7, The Salvation Army has provided Alaskans with 45,492 meals, 34,460 snacks, 4,762 food boxes, and 9,184 nights of shelter. Additionally, Salvation Army staff and officers have provided 3,770 Alaskans who reached out for help with emotional and spiritual care.
“Right now, thousands of Alaskans are struggling with the burden of making a choice between paying their bills or buying groceries while out of work during the pandemic,” said Major John Brackenbury, The Salvation Army Alaska Divisional Commander. “The Salvation Army is thankful we are able to help lift the burden of food insecurity for many Alaskans with the help of community partners like Latter-day Saints Charities.”
