When You're Helped, You Feel Like Helping

Oct 19, 2016 | by Thomas Brown

The Salvation Army has been Doing The Most Good in Alaska since 1898. In that time we have assisted tens of thousands of Alaskans. In 2015, we served 6,750 Alaskans every month, provided over 64,000 days of shelter, given 43,000 toys and gifts, supplied over 14,400 pieces of clothing, and delivered 270,000 meals. Numbers however only tell half the story. We asked our donors why they continue to give to us and here is some of what they told us...

"I have been aware of The Salvation Army and had a favorable view of their work for as long as I can recall. My father was a minister that traveled around the world and the reports we had of the post-1964 Alaska earthquake assistance gave The Salvation Army very high marks.  The Salvation Army's long-standing commitment to gospel and their moderate level of reported administrative support costs have kept me committed as a donor.  Thank you!" - Donor from Anchorage

"My first child was born at a hospital managed by The Salvation Army. The midwife and nurse delivered my bundle of joy with care and nurturing. The Salvation Army founder, William Booth, a true follower of Christ showed compassion for all humanity -- treating everyone he met like extended family. The Salvation Army: First to help in disasters and last to leave!" - Donor from Fairbanks

"Many decades ago, our teenage daughter was pregnant and not allowed to complete her high school education. The Salvation Army Booth Memorial Home welcomed her. She continued classes there. She gave her baby up for adoption. However...decades later, the baby and his wife came here to help us celebrate our 60th anniversary. We were lucky to always know where and how he was doing. Also, we have always felt the good works The Salvation Army does...when all others won't you are there. God bless you!" - Donor from Anchorage
